With that same powerful, soulful, angelic voice, she is back singing a new song. Cheryl Cook, a well known Country Music Artist from Napanee, ON Canada, has added her signature vocals to her most recent projects a Country Gospel album, “River of Yesterday” and still to be released country music CD “Little Angels.” "River of Yesterday", after being released only two months, was honored with a Covenant Award nomination in October, 2004, for Country Gospel Album of the Year by the Canadian Gospel Music Association. Cheryl had been absent from the Country music scene for a few years while she concentrated her efforts on family (two sons). |
After the sudden passing of her best friend and husband Keith, it was in the recording of “River of Yesterday” that Cheryl found the strength and faith to launch her singing career again. She has returned with that familiar, powerful, soulful sound her fans have adored in the past. She waits in eager anticipation of what the future holds. Cheryl Cook’s singing career, like most artists, has experienced some interesting turns along the way. Cheryl first began singing in church at the age of nine, and later, while attending Bible college, she traveled as part of a choral team. After college she went on to join the group “The Sure Foundation” in which she was the lead vocalist. Together they traveled throughout the United States and Canada. In 1992 Cheryl Cook (performing as Cheryl Hartin) crossed over into country music with the debut of her song “She Doesn’t Care”. Within just two weeks of the song's release to radio, it reached number thirty-six on the Canadian charts. Other songs from her debut CD “I’ll Get By” registered on the charts in North America and Europe. Seven more songs from “I’ll Get By” made it to the charts. She had five number one hits in Europe with seven in the top ten. Cheryl brought the girl who would become pop singing sensation Avril Lavigne along with her to be the opening act when she performed in her hometown of Napanee. Cheryl’s country music video “No More Broken Promises” was a big hit in Europe and aired on Canada’s Country Music Television (CMT). The song, written by Cook, was from the album “I’ll Get By”. Cheryl has performed as the opening act for Shenandoah, George Fox, and Jason McCoy. She was approached by two major record labels willing to sign her, but personal issues and family matters kept her from being able to seize the opportunity. Cheryl was encouraged by her husband, Keith, to return to the studio and create another album. The result was “Little Angels” to be released in 2005. The CD was recorded at Sound Control Studios in Nashville during the fall of 2003. Highly regarded Nashville producer Mark Moseley worked with Cheryl to ensure a quality recording. Cheryl’s love for gospel music set in motion a plan to record her first Country Gospel album. Just three months after her husband Keith’s sudden death Cheryl returned to the studio to record “River of Yesterday”, dedicated to his memory. When it came time to record “River of Yesterday”, Cheryl once again called upon the expertise of Mark Moseley. Moseley helped draw out Cheryl’s passionate vocals. “Her voice is so powerful and heart felt. When she sings it demands your attention,” says Moseley. He goes on to add, “She knows how to sell a song. She is so easy to work with in the studio.” The music of several well known Nashville artists is featured on the CD. Monty-Lane Allen, who performs with Alan Jackson, and Jennifer O’Brien, who provides vocal support for Dolly Parton, can be heard on the CD. Cook and Moseley were also able to land the services of several top session players who are featured on the works of people like Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, and Tim McGraw. The album, which she describes as a combination of bluegrass, traditional, and contemporary country music, was nominated by the Canadian Gospel Music Association in 2004 for Country Gospel Album of the Year two months after its debut release. One song on the CD, “Remember Wherever You Go”, is a song originally penned about her grandmother by Cheryl’s Uncle Clifford Booth. Cheryl is a co-writer of the song. What does the future hold for this lady who possesses captivating vocals, a dynamic style and stage presence? Cheryl Cook has already set in motion plans for a tour and live performances in 2005. The multi media production, still to be unveiled, will give the audience a deeper appreciation for every song she sings. Cheryl wants her concerts to be multi dimensional. She wants her fans to experience a special moment with each song. She is looking forward to working as a sponsored artist dedicating her talents to World Vision Canada. Cheryl is already working writing songs for her next Gospel CD and has plans to write a book. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each copy of “River of Yesterday” goes to Child CyberSearch. This nonprofit organization assists in locating missing and exploited children and returning them to their homes. Proceeds from both the album and her concerts also go to assisting youth in the local churches and surrounding communities where she performs.
